The most outrageous laws of the Roman Empire

by Sam Histo 2023. 10. 19.

The Roman Empire holds a prominent place in world history due to its sheer size and power. But did you know that this mighty empire had some of the strangest and most outrageous laws we've ever seen? Let's explore them together.

Rome

It was forbidden to own weapons

The Romans took peace very seriously, so one of their laws prohibited the ownership of weapons within the city limits. This law was meant to reduce conflict between citizens and allow them to live in peace. However, this often led to funny situations. For example, what if you were attacked by an enemy in your home within the city walls? What if you didn't have any weapons in your home to defend yourself?

No bathing on pain of death

Bathing was very important to the Romans. However, if a sick person died in a bathtub, the bathtub was considered cursed and could not be used. Therefore, if a sick person wanted to take a bath, they had to announce their health condition in advance.

Married women and wine

In ancient Rome, married women were not allowed to drink wine. This was because wine was considered a drink for men only! In some provinces, married women could even be punished by their husbands if they drank wine.

The legal status of slaves

In the Roman Empire, slaves were not legally considered people, but rather "chattels." They were merely property, and as such, could be sold or exchanged by their owners if they wished. On the flip side, however, slaves also had the right to free themselves.

Coin counterfeiting and the penalty of death

In the Roman Empire, counterfeiting coins was considered a serious offense, which is why anyone who did so was punished by death. This strict punishment was meant to stabilize the Roman economy and maintain the value of the currency.

Dental problems and doctor visits

In ancient Rome, there were no dentists. Instead, dental problems were handled by general practitioners. However, it's interesting to note that it was more common to be treated at home than to visit a doctor.

Closing thoughts

The Roman Empire is one of the most important empires in history. However, when we look at their legal system, we sometimes find outrageous regulations that we can't imagine. There are many stories about how it was forbidden to own a weapon within the city limits, how a sick person had to be forewarned of death when taking a bath, how married women were not allowed to drink wine, and so on.
But even these outrageous laws seemed necessary and reasonable to the Romans, and understanding them can help us better understand Roman life and culture.
