But Marie Antoinette instead stepped out onto a balcony and confronted the rioters directly, which temporarily calmed the situation. 

But this calm was short-lived. In 1792, France's first republic was proclaimed, and she and her husband Louis XVI were thrown into prison. 

The end of Marie Antoinette

Eventually, the revolution became so violent that it sealed her fate. In 1793, she was executed on a locomotive. During this time, her dignity and courage never faded. 

The night before her execution, in her last letter to her son, she wrote: "It is only for you and your sister that I can accept death." 

On the day of her execution, Marie-Antoinette walked confidently to the locomotive in a white dress, and despite the jeers and mockery that poured down from the crowd, she never showed a sign of fear.
